Discover Nijmegen — The oldest city in the Netherlands

Today I introduce you to Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands. Located in Geldria province, it celebrates more than 2000 years of existence. Considered a University city, Nijmegen welcomes a diverse range of age groups and nationalities. The truth is that Nijmegen arouses the curiosity of its visitors as soon as they arrive at its bridge known as “De Oversteek”. From this bridge, we can see a city that invites us to know what we see on the other side of the hill.

The two photographs shown above were taken on the respective bridge on the city side.
Getting to Nijmegen
Nijmegen and Amsterdam are separated by 120km, but getting there is manageable.

Moving between the provinces of the Netherlands is very easy due to the offer and optimization that exists in terms of public transport. Nijmegen is easily accessible by train from Amsterdam Central Station.
There are daily trips, and the price of a return ticket costs €46. If you only want to make one trip, it will cost approximately €23. Using a car as another alternative is also an option. The highways are vast so that a car trip can be quickly made in an hour and forty minutes.

Nijmegen — “New Market”
Nijmegen originating from the Latin term Noviomagus, has its origins in the Celtic words, New Market. And it is precisely one of the positive and interesting points in this city, its weekly market. It takes place every Saturday and the city is visited by several traveling stalls with the freshest products, including fruits, vegetables, bakeries, fishmongers, sweet shops with local delicacies and even clothing, gadgets and florists who decorate the space while selling their flowers.
